Around Athens, Malakoff, Eustace, Brownsboro and Chandler, the county is post oak and pine-hardwood timber, improved pasture and creek bottoms. The Trinity River forms the west line and the Neches the east.
Timber with pasture between makes good deer country. The common needs are opening closed woods, keeping food in the ground late in the year, and handling hogs in the river bottoms.
Thinning and understory work in post oak and pine is habitat control and grows browse.
Supplemental food in openings and on pasture edges.
Trapping along the Trinity and Neches bottoms is predator control.
A camera survey repeated each year documents the herd.
